Double Seventh Festival is always linked to the legend, which is a very beautiful love story spreading through the ages and has become one of the four folk love stories.
According to the legend, long ago, In the Nanyang village, there was a smart and honest young man,  parents of premature deaths, had to live with his  brother and the brother’s wife .The wife was very bad and often  mistreated him and forced him to do many things . One year fall,  the wife forced him to graze cattle.She gave him nine cows  but let him bring back 10 head of cattles, if not, he should not back .The young man was eventually moved out of the village.
Cowboy alone and drove into the mountains, he sat down and sad.because he did not know when to hurry to 10 head of cattles back home, then  there was a old people with white beard and hair  appeared and asked him why sad .Then the old people said to him: "Do not sad , in the mountains there is a sick cow, you go to feed it  and bring it to home .”

Cowboy over the mountains and  finally found   the sick cow. he took care of the cow and when the cow was cured ,he took it back . The cow said that he was a Immortal and was punished by the gold because he had do something bad .
 After returning home, the wife is still not good,she always did some bad things to harm the boy ,but the cow would try to save him .Finally, the boy was expelled home with the old cow.

One day, a beautiful  fairy called “zhi nu” with  her sisiteres down to the Heaven, bathing in the river.the cowboy saw her and fell in love with her. The fairy teached people to raise silkworms and how to bring out silk from the silkworms 

The cowboy and  the Weaver Girl finally got married and gave birth to two children.They lived a very happy life,but did not last long. This was  soon   known by  the Emperor of Heaven, Queen Mother came down to earth and brought the Weaver back to heaven,  the loving husband and wife was separated.
　
Cowboy could not fly to the Heaven  ,but the cow told him  : “when I died ,you  can wear my skin to the Heaven .” the Cowboy did that and finally met his wife  but the Queen Mother waved her headdress flower   and a Milky Way was appeared . the hasband and  wife was divided in two sides. Their loyalty to love touched the magpies and thousands magpies cambined into a bridge so that they two can meet each other . The Queen Mother have no choice but to allow the two men meet each year on July 7 on the Magpie Bridge.
 
Later, the seventh day of every lunar  seventh month is said  the day  that the cowboy and the weaver met each other on the  Magpie Bridge . On that day ,the girls will come out and  look at the stars hoping to see their annual meet  and begging God to make their own ingenuity could as aood as Weaver , praying that they can have wishful Heart of a happy marriage, thus forming the Tanabata Festival.
